Education of a Scoundrel
It was a summer day in Santa Monica and I had three hours before my next class because one was cancelled, so I decided to take a walk around the neighbourhood. I was several blocks from the campus, reading the newest LA Weekly as I strolled past the neat little houses in the area. I was minding my own business and not really paying much attention to the world. As I passed 26th Street, there were two elderly ladies (I’ll call them Gladys and Maude for no particular reason) walking their dogs headed my direction and no one else within sight. Then a couple emerged from a small, pink house, the two of them cursing a blue streak. The man was in jeans and a greasy wife-beater, the woman had on a pink bathrobe. They looked like a typical married couple having a normal marital spat, so I didn’t take much notice.

The Rhymes and Reels of Bards
After reading the new bard class for Shadowdark I was a little disappointed by the lack of magical ability. The Magic Dabbler ability states: “You can activate any spell scroll or wand using Charisma as your spellcasting stat.” This is a good start, it’s flavourful and not overpowered, and Bards are not spell-casters per se, but it is just not enough thematically. The hypnosis ability of the Bard in Shadowdark feels vague and not especially exciting to me. The original rationale for a bard was that they lived in a proto-literate society that needed poetry for mnemonic purposes as songs and poems were used to remember lore and pass it down histories, genealogies, and myths from one generation to another, so I do not see them making much use of scrolls. Based on the myths and legends about bards, I really think bardic music needs to have some sort of magical component to it.

Scoundrel's Rules
1. Never let morality stand in the way of a good time. There is no sin in pleasure if everyone is enjoying it, and nobody is hurt, so have a good time, enjoy your life, and forget about the taboos and scruples standing in your way. A day without sex is a day without sunshine...

A Very Short Story
The river Crune was a major trade route for the kingdom of Slairne, its winding path and tributaries connecting many small towns and allowing the northern and southern provinces of the country to trade with each other across the treacherous Dragon Spine mountain range that split the country in two. The bustling town of Fraining was on a thickly forested island in the middle of the Crune's wide delta on the southern coast of Slairne, a port of call for ships from the countries around the wide, eel-filled Sea of Coils that spread across the southern flank of Slairne.
