The Manicurist Who Sliced Off Her Husband's Manhood
An abused wife takes drastic action when pushed to her limits...

As a young girl in Ecuador, Lorena Gallo dreamed of one day living the All-American life. That dream became reality when she moved to Virginia at just 18 years old.
A year later, she met John Bobbitt, a handsome and charismatic Marine, at a military ball. Their connection was immediate and intense, and within nine months, they were married. But soon after the wedding, John began to reveal a much darker side of himself.

Lorena worked two jobs—one as a manicurist and the other as a nanny—just to make ends meet, while John spent his time drinking and having affairs.
For years, John allegedly beat and raped his wife at his will and upon becoming pregnant with his child, John forced her to get an abortion while he sat in the waiting room smirking...but soon, John would not be the one with a smile on his face.
Late on the night of 23rd June 1993, Lorena walked to the kitchen of the home she shared with her cruel husband and it was here that she saw a knife laying on the counter. At breaking point from the years of torment and abuse, she picked up the knife and headed to the bedroom where her sleeping husband lay.
Pulling back the sheets, Lorena grabbed his penis and sliced it off with one quick swipe.

Before John could react, Lorena had already ran to her car and was speeding down the highway still clutching on to the severed genitalia. Winding down the window, she then tossed the appendage into the night.
Hysterical as the severity of what she had done hit her, Lorena soon called the police and authorities were forced to conduct a search for John's manhood. The scavenger hunt through the grassy field was a success and John's penis was soon retrieved.
Meanwhile John was rushed to the hospital suffering large amounts of blood loss but miraculously, after a 9-hour operation, his penis was reattached.

Lorena would later claim that her actions had been the result of John arriving home drunk and subjecting her to a brutal sexual assault. She stated that upon seeing the 8-inch knife on the counter, her mind was cast back to him laughing at her in the abortion clinic and all the times he had beat her.
Enraged and pushed to the limit, Lorena wanted to hurt her husband in the only way she knew how - by taking the most precious thing to him.

Lorena was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, while John faced a charge of marital sexual assault.
Initially, he claimed their encounters were consensual, but later said he had been asleep during the incident. He admitted the two often “fought,” yet insisted Lorena was equally to blame—arguing that he simply didn’t “flaunt” his injuries the way she did.

Police reports, applications for a protective order, and testimony from several people Lorena had confided in over the years about the abuse ultimately shaped the outcome of her case. She was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
However, John was also acquitted—despite changing his story multiple times—and he was quick to capitalise on his newfound notoriety.

John went on to have a brief career in adult films and boasted about sleeping with more than 70 women. He was, in many ways, celebrated, while Lorena became a public punchline.
Vendors sold T-shirts with slogans like “A Severed Part” and “A Cut Above the Rest,” turning her trauma into spectacle. Her name became shorthand for the act itself, even appearing in song lyrics where artists threatened to “pull a Lorena.”

Lorena would get the last laugh. After their divorce was finalized in 1995, Lorena enrolled in community college, where she met her partner, David Bellinger.
Today, they share a daughter, and Lorena runs a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence. She has also appeared on talk shows and in documentaries, sharing her side of the story and advocating for survivors.
Meanwhile, John’s life took a far different path. He was twice convicted of battery for assaulting a girlfriend while intoxicated, convicted of harassing another partner, and acquitted in a separate case involving an ex-wife.

He later suffered a serious neck injury in a car accident and underwent additional medical complications. In contrast to Lorena’s advocacy work, his life has remained marked by legal troubles and instability.
